CAE pursues applied and transdisciplinary research into several areas of catastrophic and existential risk, focusing on those most likely to produce rapid and broad-based impact.

In reality, CAE is an academic-research-center-as-artwork. CAE is a conceptual artwork that stretches across multiple platforms, venues, and media. It is an ongoing and evolving meditation on what it’s like to live in the Anthropocene under conditions of constant doom. It is a prod to action to address those phenomena that pose greatest risks to life and well-being on Earth, and a reminder of the myriad ways we are implicated in global destruction. It is a platform for artists, scientists, engineers, activists, and thinkers to offer creative meditations on endings and our relations to them. It is a kind of memento mori for our planet.
